| Abstract | Receiving guardian deva (Rab Thevada) is an ancient tradition originated by the southerners, including those who immigrated to the northern states of Malaysia (e.g., Kedah, Perak, and Perlis). The researcher studied this tradition of Siamese at Plairamai,Kedah,Malaysia, where this tradition has long been practiced. The Receiving guardian deva tradition, held between the 1st day and the 11th day of the 5th waning moon, is counted as a New Year celebrating tradition of Siamese there. The rituals are divided into 4 periods. The first period, from the 1st to the 3rd day of the 5th waning moon, is the time for cleaning the pagodas in which the ashes of the ancestors are kept at the graveyard. In the second period, on the 4th day of the 5th waning moon, people invitemonks for requiem for their ancestors' pagodasin the morning and perform the ritual for receiving guardian deva at the temple in the evening. In the third period, on the 5th day of the 5th waning moon or the New Year day, people offer food alms to monks at the temple and perform the leaving misfortune ritual by floating away the bamboo raft. The final period of the rituals is the 11th day of the 5th waning moon, which is the day for returning the previous guardian god to the heaven. This ritual is held at the graveyard of the village. The tradition of welcoming guardian god reflects people's beliefs in the guardian gods who preside over grains and fertility of the earth, especially for rice growing, and the beliefs regarding fate and leaving misfortune. It also reflects people's gratitude to the ancestors, monks, and seniors in the village. |
