| Abstract | This article studied the folk myth of Walee in the three southern border provinces of Thailand and observed the spread of the myth as seen in the appearance of Nang Walee, a female character, in SunthornPhu's poetry tale. The findings revealed that the three southern border provinces' folk myth of Walee reflected the locals' respect for nature and Islam; while in SunthornPhu's central folktale, Nang Walee had extraordinary powers, similar to those of Walee in a southern mythical legend. The reason behind this could have possibly been caused by the spread of the belief about Walee during ancient times, when southern territories were once ruled by the central kingdom. However, no matter what the actual reason was, the three southern border provinces' folk myth of Walee played vital roles in giving spiritual support to the locals and showing evidence of how Islam was practiced in the southern region. |
