| Abstract | It is interesting to note that several separations are found in the story of Samutthakhot Kham Chan, one of Thai classical Literature. Both the separation of the main and supporting characters in the works are observed. For example, the separation of Ranaphimuk Witthayathon with his wife who had been abducted causes his grief. He moans and groans in deep sorrow. It is also noticeable that the poet does not present the moan in distress of the hero, Phra Samutthakhot, for keeping the hero's image, not being too weak. For the heroine, Phinthummadi, two times of her lamentations after departing from Phra Samutthakhot are also conveyed. However, the second time, her moan is very touching. As the separations always cause lamentations for the various characters, the close relationship between these separations and the two climaxes presented in the story, the suffering of the hero and the heroine from being separated from each other, are also revealed. The first climax is caused by the guardian god of the Pho Tree and the second is caused by the division of the log into two parts due to the storm in the sea. Additionally, the important roles of these separations are disclosed. Their roles are evident in the story continuity, in the characters, in making some colorful incidents in the story, and in its theme which presents the heroine's wisdom in addressing suffering caused by separation from her lost beloved or husband and in successfully searching for him. |
