The context is the teaching andlearning of English for Veterinary Profession I (ENGVET PROF I) for second-year university students inBangkok, Thailand. This course focuses on improvingstudents' listening and speaking skills in theveterinary field. In order to make the materials relevantand attractive to Net Gen learners, a game-basedsupplementary e-learning program considered analternative pedagogy adaptable for Net Gen. Thepurposes of the study are to develop an effective gamebasedsupplementary e-learning program, called CULIZOO, for students in English for Veterinary Profession Iand to evaluate the effectiveness of the program. Thestudy sample was the second-year Veterinary Sciencestudents enrolled in the English for VeterinaryProfession I course in 2014 and 2015. An experimentaland a control groups did the same pretest at thebeginning of the course. The results from an Independent Samples t-test, at a significance level of0.05, confirmed that both groups were comparable.Only students in 2015 were exposed to CULI ZOO.Scores from the midterm and final examinations wereused as posttest scores. After the experimental groupstudents finished using CULI ZOO, they completed aset of the questionnaires that elicited their opinionstoward CULI ZOO. Sixteen students were randomlyselected for interviews. The results obtained from thet-test showed a statistically significant difference in theposttest scores between both groups. Likewise, therewas a significant difference between the pretest andposttest scores of the students in the experimentalgroup. The data from the questionnaires andinterviews showed that the students in theexperimental group had positive opinions toward CULIZOO. In the experimental group, the students' totalscores from CULI ZOO correlated with their scoresfrom the posttest. |
