| Abstract | This study investigated the effects of utilizingcorpus tools on university EFL student teachers'learning and production of verb-noun collocations. The participants were 60 first-year student teachersin an English Language Teaching Department of astate university in Turkey. The research followed a preand post-test quasi-experimental research design inwhich two classes participated in experimental andcontrol groups. Both quantitative and qualitativeresearch methods were used. Quantitative data werecollected via a Collocation Knowledge Test which wasadministered as a pre and post-test. In addition, student teachers' writings before and after theimplementation were investigated for tracking theproduction of collocations. Moreover, participants' opinions about the use of corpus tools were collectedvia a survey. The quantitative data were analyzed byrunning ANCOVA tests. Though the participants inthe experimental group performed slightly better thanthe ones in the control group on the collocationknowledge test, this difference was found to bestatistically non-significant. However, there was astatistically significant difference between the groupsin terms of production of the collocations. Almost allof the student teachers found concordancing toolsvery helpful in learning of collocations. The resultswere discussed regarding exposure to authentic dataand integrating corpus consultation into EFLclassrooms. |
