| Abstract | The purpose of this study was to investigate theattitudes of content subject teachers and theirfreshman students towards the use of a local languagein English-medium content subjects given at BahirDar University (BDU), Ethiopia. This study examinedwhether attitudes towards the use of a local languagein English-medium content subjects could be affectedby demographic factors like first language backgroundand gender. The participants of the study werecontent subject teachers and freshman students inthree faculties at BDU. Data were collected throughquestionnaires distributed to both groups ofparticipants. The findings show that both the contentsubject teachers and their freshman students hadfavorable attitudes towards the use of Amharic, a locallanguage of wider communication, in the Englishmediumcontent subject classroom. Moreover, the results indicate that the attitudes of the studentstowards the use of Amharic in the classroom were notaffected by first language background or gender.Based on the findings, it was concluded that contentsubject teachers or their students should not feelrestrained by using Amharic judiciously as long asAmharic helps them to deliver or understand content. Finally, recommendations are made for furtherresearch in the area. |
