| Abstract | This study examines doctorial students'needs and preferences for written feedback onthesis writing from supervisors. Several studieshave explored students' preferences for writtenfeedback to respond to students writing in theclassroom. However, relatively little or no researchhas been previously reported about what aspectsof written feedback (content, generic or linguistic)are preferred by PhD students to thesis writing inthe Ethiopian context. A questionnaire wasadministered and collected from fifty one doctoralcandidates who were currently pursuing theirprojects in four disciplines. Participants werepurposefully selected to complete a questionnaire.Descriptive statistics was used to analyze the data. The findings of this study found that PhDstudents tend to prefer feedback on Contentknowledge to feedback on Genre knowledge andLinguistic accuracy and appropriateness. Thestudy found a wide range of PhD students' perceived needs regarding specific categories offeedback, which they valued written feedback oncontent most, and this preference was consistentthroughout all the four disciplines. The practicalimplications of these findings for higher educationsupervision, and future research directions arethen presented. |
