| Abstract | Paraphrasing is a signature practice ofconstructing intertextual discourse in academicwriting. It is a story retelling technique commonlyemployed by academic writing classes to tackleplagiarism. However, teaching and learning ofparaphrasing tend to place a very heavy emphasis onliteral meanings of source messages and faithfulreproductions of source meanings through newlinguistic systems (e.g. altering syntactic structures, changing lexical forms, substituting synonyms),which may not effectively respond to authenticacademic writing. Given this textual orientation, inferential reasoning which is essential in academicdiscourse tends to be relatively overlooked. Toaddress this neglect, this article proposes analternative pedagogical approach that exploitsinferential thinking as a countermeasure toplagiarism. Specifically, it illustrates how inferentialreasoning principles can be fostered and incorporatedinto paraphrasing instruction to assist EFL students in producing non-plagiarized academic works. Inaddition, it points out the kinds of knowledgestudents need to have when they paraphrase sourcetexts to support their argumentation. |
