| Abstract | In recognition of the growing volume of communicationbetween people from different cultural backgroundsaround the globe presently, this study was conducted toinvestigate Thai EFL teachers' perceptions towardintercultural communicative competence (ICC) in threedimensions: (i) their understanding of ICC; (ii) theirviews on how to integrate ICC into English languageteaching; and (iii) their perceptions of ICC'scontributions to learners' English communicativecompetence. Data were collected from sixteen Thai EFLteachers at a private university in Thailand viaquestionnaires and interviews. Quantitative data fromthe questionnaires were analyzed through descriptivestatistics while the qualitative data from both thequestionnaires and interviews were analyzed with aconstant comparative method. The findings revealed that the participants had a general, not a firm, grasp ofICC. They also perceived that ICC can be integrated intotheir teaching by presenting more cultural content tolearners. Nevertheless, according to the ICC theoreticalexplication, this way of integration is not sufficient, noris it effective in helping learners acquire ICC. Finally, the participants perceived that ICC was an importantelement in English language teaching today, but it didnot considerably help learners to better communicate inEnglish. An important implication from this study wasthat ELT teacher educators include ICC in teachereducation programs to ensure a successful integrationof ICC into English language teaching. |
