| Abstract | Various studies investigating psychological variablesassociated with reading comprehension are currentlyavailable. However, there has been little linguisticresearch conducted to examine the pedagogical practicesof teachers in teaching reading comprehension of EFLSecondary Schools, Ethiopia. The present study wasconducted to fill the research gap by examining thecurrent practices of teachers in teaching reading and howthe teachers handle and organize reading comprehension. This study employed a descriptive and interpretive casestudy design that was analyzed through qualitativemethods. The data was collected from observations of themost experienced EFL teachers' best representativecomprehension classes and interviews with these teachersat Fasilo Secondary School, Ethiopia. The observationresults of a corpus of lessons and interviews with teachersabout their work were analyzed using an evaluativeinterpretativeparadigm. The results of this researchrevealed two-stranded themes. First, this study revealedthat all the teachers exhibited similar practices ofteaching reading comprehension, such as, giving assignments and expecting correct responses and a briefdescription of the topic. It also revealed that the teachersneither focused on the content nor showed any attentionto constructing meaning of the content in the text. It isrecommended that teachers need to teach readingcomprehension in a systematic way to help students beequipped strategies with improving their readingcomprehension. |
