| Abstract | This study investigated how frequency influencedacquisition of L2 English infinitive and gerundcomplements among L1 Thai learners. Participants wereseparated into low and high proficiency groups based ontheir CU-TEP scores. Each group consisted of 30participants. Data were collected using the Word SelectionTask (WST) and the Grammaticality Judgement Test (GJT).Initial findings revealed that L1 Thai learners acquiredinfinitive complements before gerund complements. Thiscould probably be explained by the usage-based theory, specifically, the concept of type frequency. It was assumedthat learners acquired infinitive complements first becausethey were considered a high type frequency construction, and gerund complements later because they wereconsidered a low type frequency construction. It wasassumed that the high type frequency construction was easier for L2 learners to acquire because they were exposedmore often to this construction type. Further investigationrevealed that the frequency of verbs occurring in the targetcomplement constructions probably contributed to thelearners' low-level constructional schemas (i.e. the abstractrepresentations of constructions which are lexicallyspecific) and their language use. |
