| Abstract | While corpus linguistics has been applied towardsmany specific academic purposes, reports are fewregarding its use to facilitate learning of legal English bynon-native English speakers. Specialized corpora arerequired because legal English often differs significantlyfrom ordinary usage, with words such as bar, motion, and hearing having completely different meanings anduse. This paper documents the process of creating andvalidating a sixteen million-word corpus of (American)legal English, and provides examples of analysesavailable for language learners. Written decisions andoral argument transcripts from the U.S. Supreme Courtand other appellate courts were ultimately chosen tocomprise the corpus due to their authentic andcomprehensive use of legal jargon. Overall, this corpusdemonstrates that appellate court decisions, availableonline, can comprise a corpus tailored for legal Englishlearning. |
