Abstract This paper presents the results of a multidimensionalanalysis to investigate stylistic patterns and theircommunicative functions in language teaching researcharticles. The findings were that language teaching researcharticles contained six stylistic patterns and communicativefunctions. Pattern I consisted of seven salient positivefeatures (i.e. Present Perfect Aspects, Split Auxiliaries, TypeToken Ratio, Possibility Modals, Total Adverbs, Infinitives,and That Relative Clauses on Subject Position) which cooccurredto perform a 'Persuasion Focused' function. PatternII consisted of eight salient positive features (i.e. PredicativeAdjectives, Be as Main Verbs, Analytic Negations,Downtoners, Emphatics, Demonstrative Pronouns,Predictive Modals, and Adverbs) which co-occurred toperform an 'Evaluative Stance Focused' function. Pattern IIIconsisted of seven salient positive features (i.e. SuasiveVerbs, The Pronoun It, That Verb Complements, PrivateVerbs, Wh Relative Clauses on Subject Positions, ThatDeletion, and Adverbial Subordinators) which occurred toperform a 'Claim Focused' function. Pattern IV consisted offive salient positive features (i.e. Present Tense, Conjuncts, That Verb Complements, Attributive Adjectives, and PhrasalCoordinations) and three negative features (i.e. PastParticipial WHIZ Deletion Relatives, Past Tense, andAgentless Passives) which co-occurred to perform'Established Knowledge versus Past Action Focused'functions. Pattern V consisted of six salient positive features(i.e. First Person Pronouns, Public Verbs, Third PersonPronouns, Causative Adverbial Subordinators, and ThatDeletion) which co-occurred to perform a 'OwnershipFocused' function. Pattern VI consisted of five salientpositive features (i.e. Gerunds, Present Participial WHIZDeletion Relatives, Average Word Length, Present ParticipialClauses, and Demonstrative Adjectives) which co-occurredto perform a 'Modified Information Focused' function. Theimplication for instruction and future research has beenpresented in the Discussion.
