| Abstract | Teaching a class of mixed EFL/ESL levels can beproblematic for both instructors and students. Thedisparate levels of ability often mean that somestudents are not challenged enough while othersstruggle to keep pace. Drawing on experience in theuniversity classroom in Japan, this practice promotesgood preparation, self-reliance, inclusiveness, andmaximum class participation. In two parts, this paperdemonstrates how independent learning can be usedto bring out the best in classes of this sort. The firstpart of the paper explains the method students use tocreate a self-learning portfolio. It will explain howstudents construct their portfolios to formulatequestions and reach tentative conclusions before theyarrive in class. The second part highlights thebenefits of this system, presenting evidence that thisapproach engages students in mixed-level classes byfostering communication and inclusiveness. Examplesare presented on how this mechanism boostsparticipation and motivation among even the most reluctant students. While bolstering engagement, thisprocess at the same time offers opportunities for groupconsensus and strong student leaders to emerge. Finally, this paper concludes with a reinforcement ofthe merits of this system and how this effectivetechnique creates a student-centered class. |
