| Abstract | The study aimed to examine the effect of explicitreading instruction as an approach to ConceptOrientedReading Instruction (CORI) framework onEFL students' informational text comprehension andengagement. The explicit reading instruction wasimplemented with 39 first-year Thai undergraduatestudents over a 10-week period. It was found that thestudents improved their reading comprehension andengagement after the implementation. There were alsosignificant differences between the students' pre-testand post-test mean scores. The results from theReading Engagement Index (REI) and ReadingEngagement Checklist indicated positive changes inbehavioral, affective and cognitive engagements. However, the social engagement was unnoticeable.Three instructional practices were videotaped and transcribed to analyze students' performances andengagement processes in reading. The study suggeststhat EFL reading educators should encouragestudents to involve more in social interactions in orderto enable them to see perspectives and to sociallyconstruct information from texts. Discussion andimplications provided the guidelines for engagingreaders in the reading process. |
