| Abstract | This research aims at examining the reactionsof tertiary EFL teachers towards the use ofperformance-based language assessment. The studyemployed a mixed-method research methodology. For the quantitative method, 36 teachers respondedto a questionnaire survey. In addition, four teachersparticipated in the in-depth interviews which wereconducted twice, at the beginning and at the end ofthe semester. The data from the survey revealedthat the teachers were aware that the assessments(performance-based and traditional methods) couldhave both positive and negative impacts onteaching and learning. In addition, the participantsin the interviews pointed out that they had rathernegative attitudes toward the performance-basedassessment used, after it had been implemented forover six years, because there were weaknesses inthe assessment especially concerning tasks, ratingscales, and rater training. They recommended thatthe rating scales should be revised and the rater training should be vigorously implemented to ensurethe quality of the assessment process. |
