| Abstract | Performance-based assessment has gainedmore attention from ELT practitioners since the actualperformances produced by students are evaluated inthis type of assessment. However, the assessment ofstudents' performances involves more complicatedprocedures when compared with more traditionaltesting methods. This paper, therefore, points outcrucial considerations in adopting this type ofassessment in a language class. First, the articleintroduces the concepts of performance-basedlanguage assessment and its major characteristics. Then, the two main characteristics: rating scales andrater training are discussed. In the rating scalessection, different types of rating scales, as well asapproaches in developing rating scales, are exploredwith the emphasis on the scales used for assessingwriting. Finally, the paper presents the roles of ratertraining in performance-based assessment and how toconduct such training. |
