| Abstract | For underprivileged children living in a slum area, education is one of the primary tools contributing to a better lifewhen they grow up. The present study aimed at investigatingthe needs and problems in English language learning ofdisadvantaged children in the Klong Toey slum, the largest slumin the Bangkok Metropolis. Data were collected by means ofquestionnaires and interviews with 100 children, volunteerteachers, and community members. The study findings showedthat children from the slum area realize the significance ofEnglish and that they are interested in learning English throughgames, songs, videos, and TV programs. They also enjoylearning English through technology. However, the teachersstate that these children need more motivation in theclassroom, which could be increased through interestingactivities and a fun atmosphere that supports theircommunicative skill development. Furthermore, communitymembers, despite their understanding of the significance of theEnglish language, admit that their living conditions form amajor hindrance to giving more support to these children'slearning. Language policy planners and educators can makeuse of these findings to revise existing English curricula to better suit context-specific needs and problems of similarchildren. |
