| Abstract | Within the realm of translation studies, little attention has been allotted to conceptual metaphor. Translating metaphor has often been approached prescriptively i.e., applying certain rules to find equivalent metaphors between the source and target languages and disregarding the cultural variables that may hinder the appropriate transfer of metaphor to the target text. Being aware of this lacuna, the current article has attempted to investigate the translation of metaphor from a cognitive perspective in the genre of economic texts from Arabic to English. Through a qualitative and quantitative analysis of a corpus of sixty-five Arabic economic texts and their English counterparts, the study has unveiled that both Arabic and English users conceptualise the domain of economics via their experiential knowledge of the physical world. It has furthermore proven that both languages, to a great extent, homogenously map economic concepts through identical conceptual metaphors which implies our universalistic view of economy. |
