| Abstract | Academic literature and recent surveys allude to a lack of confidence and preparedness amongst translation students for their professional future. Although translator training institutions strive to facilitate the transition from student to professional, difficulties persist, particularly in relation to positioning oneself in what has become a competitive, fragmented and technologised market. Focussing on the perceptions of UK-based translation students, this article discusses the findings from a survey of 51 postgraduate translation students on their expectations of a freelance translation career, touching on the participants’ career plans, their perceptions of translation as a professional service, and their thoughts on freelance translation as a secure profession. Although the participants anticipated difficult career debuts and speculated that general and translation technologies, such as artificial intelligence (AI) and machine translation (MT), may challenge the recognition of and demand for professional human translators, they were, nevertheless, cautiously optimistic about their future in the industry. |
