Abstract We numerically investigate the effects of rib turbulators on turbulent flow and heat transfer in a gas turbine blade with impingement cooling. The 45-angled ribs are attached on two opposite walls of the blade with two ribbed channels. Three-dimensional steady-state Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations combined with the standard k- model and heat equation are used to analyse the turbulent flow, temperature distribution and cooling effectiveness. The numerical results indicate that a blade with ribs generates more re-circulation regions and secondary flows, leading to higher turbulent kinetic energy, wall shear stress and a 23.86% increase in cooling effectiveness. In addition, increasing inlet velocity increases the volume-averaged cooling effectiveness, volume-averaged turbulent kinetic energy and area-averaged wall shear stress.
