Abstract This research presents an optimal design of the reinforced concrete rectangular column under axial force and biaxial bending using simulated annealing algorithm to find the optimum parameter of simulated annealing algorithm and the saving cross section. The minimum total cost including the price of concrete, steel, formwork and labor are defined as the objective function in this study. Microsoft visual basic 6 was used to develop a program and to design the reinforced concrete columns according to the strength design method of Engineering Institute of Thailand (E.I.T.1008-38) code. Four samples are provided by varying the covering, axial force and biaxial moment. From the results, it was found that the simulated annealing algorithm was suitable algorithm to design the reinforced concrete biaxial bending column. The total cost was set as the initial temperature for the first state to search the optimum solution at the first period. The step of decreasing temperature of 2% had the effective number of iterations and obtained the stable solution.
