Abstract This study aimed to analyze climate variability, its impacts on rice production, and the adaptation strategies of rice farmers in Chiang Yuen District, Maha Sarakham Province. The study employed 31 years of climatic data (1994–2024) together with in-depth interviews with 26 rice-farming households located in non-irrigated and irrigated areas. The results revealed that climate variability became more pronounced during 2014–2024, characterized by a declining trend in the number of rainy days, increasingly irregular rainfall distribution, and rising average temperatures. These changes adversely affected rice production in different ways across the two production systems. In non-irrigated areas, farmers experienced dry spells, water shortages, delayed planting, increased production costs, and reduced yields. In irrigated areas, waterlogging, inadequate drainage, and rising water management costs were the major challenges affecting rice production. Farmers responded through a range of adaptation strategies, including adjusting planting calendars, shifting from transplanting to direct seeding, increasing the use of agricultural machinery, developing supplementary water sources, and adopting short-duration rice varieties suited to local conditions. The findings further indicated that the impacts of climate variability and farmers’ adaptation responses differed according to water accessibility, local environmental conditions, and household livelihood assets. The study highlights the importance of area-specific agricultural extension and water management interventions to strengthen farmers’ adaptive capacity and enhance the resilience of rice production systems under increasing climate variability.
