Abstract In contrast, early-stage infestations (damage scale levels 1–3) could not be detected. Vegetation index values were found to decrease as rice damage scales and the percentage of damaged area increased. Among the evaluated indices, NDVI exhibited the strongest relationship with rice damage and provided the highest predictive performance (r² = 0.506–0.512), with lower RMSE values than SAVI and GNDVI. These findings indicate that UAV-based multispectral imagery can potentially be applied for assessing rice damage caused by BPH infestation and for supporting pest outbreak monitoring and precision pest management in rice fields.
