Abstract The brown planthopper (BPH), Nilaparvata lugens (Stål) (Hemiptera: Delphacidae), is recognized as a major insect pest causing severe damage to rice production systems. The potential of UAV-based multispectral imagery for assessing BPH damage in rice fields was evaluated in this study. Experiments were conducted at the Thailand Rice Science Institute during the 2022 and 2023 dry seasons. Different levels of BPH damage were induced under field conditions. Field observations and aerial imagery were collected at seven-day intervals following insect release using a UAV equipped with a multispectral camera. Vegetation indices, including NDVI, SAVI, and GNDVI, were analyzed in relation to rice damage scales and the percentage of damaged areas. The results demonstrated that aerial imagery with a spatial resolution of 1 cm/pixel was unable to detect individual BPH populations; however, symptoms and plant damage could be identified once the severity reached a damage scale rating of 5 or higher.
