Abstract Purple rice is a local rice variety of Thailand that contains several important bioactive compounds which help reduce the risk of various diseases. However, it lacks fragrance, a characteristic highly valued by consumers. Therefore, the improvement and development of purple rice with fragrance is economically and commercially important. In addition, purple rice is photoperiod-sensitive, can be cultivated only once a year, has tall plant stature, and produces relatively low yields compared with modern improved varieties that are photoperiod-insensitive, short-statured, and high-yielding. This research aimed to develop purple rice breeding lines with fragrance and high yield. An advanced purple rice line (KDK10) which is photoperiod-insensitive, short-statured but no fragrance was
