| Abstract | Most sugarcane cultivation areas are characterized by low soil fertility; therefore, effective fertilizer management and the development of suitable sugarcane cultivars will improve the yield and yield quality of juice sugarcane. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of nitrogen (N) fertilizer management on photosynthetic traits, growth, yield components, yield, and N use efficiency (NUE) of juice sugarcane cultivars. A 2 x 5 factorial experiment in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with four replications was used. Factor A consisted of two sugarcane cultivars: Suphanburi 50 and Sisamrong 1. Factor B consisted of five different N fertilizer managements; no second N application (N0), recommended rate of N (N1), double the recommended rate (N2), recommended rate combined with foliar application (N3), and recommended rate combined with 1,000 kg/rai of farmyard manure (N4). All treatments were applied with 15-15-15 fertilizer at a rate of 30 kg/ha after transplanting. Results showed that differences in sugarcane varieties significantly affected photosynthetic traits at 6 months after transplanting (MAT), including net photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance, and transpiration rate. Furthermore, significant difference among sugarcane cultivars was observed for plant height, number of tillers per hill, number of stalks per hill, stalk diameter, stalk dry weight, juice yield, and brix. Notably, Suphanburi 50 had higher overall potential compared to Sisamrong 1. Different N managements showed that N2 and N3 resulted in the highest net photosynthetic rate (at 4 and 6 MAT). All N applied treatments (N1-N4) resulted in significantly higher juice yield at final harvest (8 MAT). Moreover, a significant interaction between sugarcane cultivars and N fertilizer managements was observed for green leaf ratio, stalk dry weight, biomass, and NUE for biomass. Suphanburi 50 produced the highest stalk dry weight and biomass under N1 and N2 treatments, whereas differences N fertilizer managements had no effect on the stalk dry weight and biomass of Sisamrong 1. |
