Abstract Metacognition strategies in Thai reading instructional is the application of knowledge and thinking process to make the reader have self-awareness as well as self-management in making a reading plan, selecting suitable ways or strategies, controlling and checking comprehension and evaluating, together with taking into account the learning ability in reading of the reader. These components will enable the reader to solve the reading problems and to improve one's own reading effectively basing on Cognitive theory which emphasizes change since learning will not take place unless the reader can develop one's own conceptual ideas. Schema theory also comes into play as interactive process between the reader and what is being read is an emphasis by making a plan to determine ways to read, and evaluating periodically to check one's own reading. Whether using Metacognition strategies in teaching reading will be effective according to the reading purpose or not, following what to practice according to each component of teaching reading is of importance
