| Abstract | Team research has attracted attention in the relevant field for many years. This research output is a requirement for academic faculty and is related to promotion and successful advancement. To help accomplish this requirement, many researchers work as a team. The effectiveness of the team plays a crucial part in the research output. The purpose of this study was to develop a model for research teams at Guangdong University of Petrochemical Technology, China, the study had five objectives. 1) To explore the desired team leadership competencies needed to drive research teams. 2) To identify the level of team leadership competencies and academic leadership behaviors of research team members at Guangdong University of Petrochemical Technology, China. 3) To determine the significant impact between team leadership competencies and academic leadership behaviors that affect research team effectiveness.4) To develop a model to enhance research team effectiveness at the Guangdong University of Petrochemical Technology, China. 5) To develop a proposed model to enhance research team effectiveness at Guangdong University of Petrochemical Technology, China. The findings of qualitative and quantitative research presented the following key conclusions. Ten team leadership competencies were obtained from the qualitative analysis. From the developed instrument, the current level of team leadership competencies (M=4.08, SD=0.41) and academic leadership behaviors (M=4.06, SD=0.45) were obtained, and they were evaluated to be high. A two-way ANOVA was used to analyze the effects of team leadership and academic leadership behavior on team effectiveness. The p-value for team leadership competencies was .006, and the p-value for academic leadership behaviors was .003, indicating a significant relationship. The multiple coefficients showed that r = .642, p=.000, R² for this model was .412, which indicated that Team Leadership Competencies and Academic Leadership Behaviors predict 41.2% of Research Team Effectiveness. Based on the above research findings, a model to improve research team effectiveness was proposed and validated by six experts. Model implications and implementation are discussed and recommended. |
