| Abstract | “Tamnan Jai Nai Khlong” by Suksan Boonyaphalanant is a literary work that captures the memories and lifestyle of the Hua Takhe community, a canal-side settlement near Bangkok where the author grew up. Spanning 12 chapters, it narrates stories through his and his family’s perspectives, with the canal as the lifeline for transportation, trade, and livelihoods like fishing and flour milling, reflecting past abundance. The simple yet evocative language fosters intimacy, bringing daily life—such as the mother’s cooking or children’s play—vividly to readers. Family characters highlight deep bonds and local culture. The book also mirrors the community’s transformation as modernity—roads, industrial products, and canal barriers—replaces traditional ways. Flour mills closed, fish dwindled, and large boats vanished, underscoring urban development’s impact. The title “Tamnan Jai Nai Khlong” signifies cultural heritage, the people’s spirit, and hidden meanings tied to the canal. Beyond a personal memoir, it holds historical and sociological value, urging readers to reflect on their roots and the preservation of local traditions amid inevitable change. |
