Abstract Objective: This study aimed to examine the Wasaṭīyah-based leadership attributes of Muslim university students in the liberal era within higher education institutions in Thailand’s southern border provinces.Methodology: This study employed a qualitative research design. The key informants consisted of 24 participants from four higher education institutions in Pattani, Yala, and Narathiwat provinces, selected through purposive sampling based on predetermined criteria: (1) four administrators or lecturers responsible for student affairs, and (2) twenty student leaders who held or had previously held positions in student organizations. Data were collected through focus group discussions (FGDs), guided by focus group discussion guide and supported by field notes. Data collection continued until data saturation was achieved.Research Findings: The findings revealed that the characteristics of Wasatiyah-oriented leadership among Muslim students in the era of liberalism comprise four dimensions: (1) faith in Allah and adherence to Islamic principles as the foundation for fulfilling responsibilities; (2) self-management and self-development through mindfulness, discipline, responsibility, and continuous personal improvement; (3) interpersonal relationships characterized by respect for diversity, constructive communication, and consultation to promote justice; and (4) social contextual awareness, emphasizing justice, the common good, harmonious coexistence in a multicultural society, and the promotion of sustainable development.Contributions: The findings provide a conceptual guideline for future research and the development of practical frameworks to strengthen Wasaṭīyah-based leadership among Muslim university students in Thai higher education.
