| Abstract | Background: Intrathecal morphine is highly effective for reducing postoperative pain, however thistechnique cause more side effects comparing to spinal anesthesia alone. Pruritus is a mostcommon side effect. Objective: This study investigated the efficacy of tenoxicam to prevent pruritus in patientsundergoing surgery under spinal anesthesia and intrathecal morphine.Method: In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study, 64 patients undergoing electivesurgery with spinal anesthesia were studied. All patients received 0.5% hyperbaric bupivacaineand morphine 0.3 mg intrathecally. After spinal anesthesia, the patients were randomized toreceived tenoxicam 40 mg or normal saline intravenously, both groups were followed up for 24hours for symptom and severity of pruritus and side effect of tenoxicam.Result: The incidence of pruritus was significantly lower in the tenoxicam group when comparedto placebo group at 30 minute 2 hours and 4 hours postoperatively but was not significant 8 hoursand 24 hours. There was no report of adverse effect from tenoxicam. Conclusions: Intravnous tenoxicam 40 mg. effective to prevent pruritus in patients who receivedintrathecal morphine. |
