| Abstract | Although one third of perinatal mortality occurs during delivery, careful and effective intrapartum fetalmonitoring has been proved to lessen favourably such a high rate of mortality. The most widely usedmonitoring methods are intermittent auscultation (IA), and continuous cardiotocography (CTG). Both methodsare equally effective. IA is user-friendly and convenient, hence its unrivalled popularity. This method, however, requires precise listening skills and a good understanding of its shortcomings on the analyst's part. CTG, on theother hand, is known for yielding more detailed analysis. However, a lack of acquaintance, experience, andskills will ultimately, and frequently, lead to misinterpretation of the results and to unnecessary cesareansections. Therefore, care should be taken in the use of both methods. When the fetus shows a nonreassuringfetal heart rate pattern, the obstetricians must determine the causes and solve them, while simultaneouslyproviding a supportive treatment. Furthermore, such ancillary tests as fetal pulse oxymetry, fetal scalp bloodpH, scalp stimulation test, and vibroacoustic stimulation, may be brought into use. |
