| Abstract | Osteoporosis is the most important risk factor for hip fracture inpostmenopausal women. Between 10 and 15 percent of them die within a year oftheir fracture. About half of the survivors can live independently but one third ofthem need permanent home nursing care. The current "gold standard" method ofbone density testing is dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) of the spine andhip. Once the diagnosis of osteoporos~s is made, it is time to consider managementoption. A healthy life style is important for everyone : an adequate intake of calciumand vitamin D and reguiar weight-bearing exercise. Pharmacological agents areindicated for all patients with fragility fractures and for may patients with low bonedensity Estrogen is the agent, of choice for both prevention and treatment ofpostmenopausal osteoporosis ; however; once estrogen is stopped, bone masslevels drop fairly quickly. Effective alternative agent include alendronate(a bisphosphosphanate) and calcitonin. |
