| Abstract | Plastination invented by Dr. Gunther von Hagens from University of Heidelberg, Germany is a unique method of preserving tissue in a life like state. In the plastination technique, biological tissue water and lipids are replaced by cured polymers through forced impregnation. It is a vacuun process in which biological specimens are imprenated with a reactive polymers such as sillcone rubber, epoxy or polyester resin. The improved properties of plastinated specimens are mainly accounted for by the superior quality of curable polymers. The class of polymer used determines the mechanical (flexible or firm) and optical (opaque or transparent) properties of the specimens. Plastination specimans are dry, odorless, durable, last indefinitely and can literally be grasped. |
