| Abstract | This research study aimed to explore the material and physical properties of yarn from Calathea core, to examine the craft method in producing yarn from Calathea core, to study natural yarn dyeing from Calathea core and to assess the satisfaction with hand-woven carpets made from and decorated with yarn from Calathea core. The researcher conducted the experiment by separating fibers from the Calathea core. The fibers are combed, then hand spun into yarn, and woven to make a carpet, using mixed-techniques of handweaving and handtufting. The results of this study revealed that the part of the Calathea core that is extracted as fiber by boiling and immersing it in a different solution displays slight color variations in the different fibers. The softness of the skin of each fiber depends on the duration of boiling. The amount of fiber obtained does not differ. The simplest way to use a chemical composition to separate fibers which can then be easily combed is to boil them with caustic soda or sodium hydroxide (NaOH) at a ratio of 30 grams and some soap chips per 1,500 milliliters of water for 1 hour and 30 minutes, using 100 grams of Calathea core. This process will produce 30 grams of soft, smooth, cream-colored fibers. Fiber denier tested at 84.7 based on ISO 7211/5:1984 (E) SECTION 2, METHOD A. The ultimate tensile strength tested at 2.57 newtons or 262.14 gram-force based on ISO 5079 : 1995(E). The fibers obtained from the fiber processing are softened and then mixed with cotton fibers at a ratio of 50:50 through the craft process in producing yarn. Applying an ancient yarn spinning process, the obtained fibers will be large and thick with an uneven surface and with a significant toughness, while the color will show up as a beautiful light brown. The ultimate tensile strength tested at 8.84 newtons or 901.12 gram-force based on ISO 2062 : 1993(E) METHOD B. Its sufficient toughness can be used for carpets designed for interior decoration and can be woven into a carpet. According to an evaluation of the results of buyer satisfaction surveys, for those who like natural products based on 6 aspects, it can be seen that the use of yarn from Calathea core for hand-woven carpets designed for interior decoration in the aspects of Aesthetics, Function, Structure, Material and Care all received a rating of "highly satisfied". Therefore, based on the physical properties, the yarn is derived from a natural material that is environmentally friendly. This can be another alternative when choosing textile materials that can be further developed into other products. |
