| Abstract | This paper contributes to establishing a more vital role forsustainable urban planning in dealing with the effects of natural (suchas earthquakes) and man-made (such as conflicts) destructive eventsthrough building up a conceptual framework. Multidimensionalqualitative research method through document studies, historicalanalysis of destructive events and their stages, and case studies (Kabul,Afghanistan; Mostar, Bosnia and Banda Aceh, Indonesia). Thisresearch shows that existing efforts for events aftermath suffer fromheavy dependency on foreign aids, marginalizing local context, andlack of proper coordination. The suggested framework comprises fourmajor phases that have to be handled by good management includingpre-after-the-event, emergency relief stage, transitional stage, andrecovery phase. Sustainable urban planning needs to deal with thesestages individually and holistically |
