| Abstract | Introduction: Change in Easy Asthma Clinic (EAC) management at Sappasitthiprasong hospital by including pharmacists as a multidisciplinary team to provide pharmaceutical care may affect the outcomes of medical care for patients with asthma. The purpose of this study was to evaluate outcomes of pharmaceutical medical care provided for asthmatic patients and identify the time lag between pharmaceutical care provision and its outcomes. Method: This longitudinal observational study included all patients with asthma, who received pharmaceutical care services at EAC from October 2011 to September 2012. Demographic information, prescriptions, and level of asthma symptoms controlled (uncontrolled, partially controlled, controlled) were retrieved from medical records and electronic medical database. Demographic and prescription data were analyzed by descriptive statistics. Time lag between pharmaceutical care provision and level of asthma symptoms controlled were analyzed by multilevel logistic regression. Results: Of 86 patients with asthma, 64.08% were female with the average age of 55.14 years old. The proportion of patients with asthma symptoms controlled increased from 12.79% to 17.44% in 6 months and 33.33% in 12 months after providing pharmaceutical care. The proportion of patients with daytime symptoms ? 2 episode/week, with %PEFR > 80, or no nighttime symptoms increased whereas the proportion of patients who came to emergency visit or readmitted decreased. Compared with baseline, level of asthma symptoms controlled at 3 months and 6 months was not statistically significant different. However, asthmatic patients were 8.19 times more likely to have their symptoms controlled when compared with baseline (OR = 8.19, 95% CI = 2.67-25.06, p<0.001). Conclusion: Patients with asthma had better controlled symptoms after receiving pharmaceutical care. Emergency room visit and readmission cases also decreased. Effect of pharmaceutical care was significantly observed at 12 months. Therefore, pharmacist should involve in EAC by routinely providing pharmaceutical care for asthmatic patients. |
