Abstract Introduction: The current situation and disease complications related to roll-your-own (RYO) cigarette consumption in Thailand are still unclear. Also, tobacco control law and regulation regarding the production and consumption of RYO cigarette is still insufficient. Therefore Thais lack of adequate and accurate information related to the dangers of RYO. The current situation and basic knowledge of the dangers of RYO cigarette consumption within the Ubon Ratchathani University area were therefore surveyed. Materials and Method: This was a pre-posttest, controlled group design. Totally, there were 145 participants enrolled in the study including, study (70) and control group (75) subjects, who were randomly stratified into each group. All participants filled out the questionnaire paper (pre-test), then only study group attended the exhibition related to the dangers of roll-your-own (RYO) cigarettes. Later, both groups again filled out the questionnaire. All data was analyzed via both descriptive and analytical statistics. Results: There were 25 RYO cigarette smokers in the study (14) and control (11) groups. Most were more than 40 years of age, low income, and had primary school level of education. Reasons for smoking RYO cigarettes included good taste, cheap price, and being easy to find. Most RYO participants still hadn't given up smoking. Nevertheless, knowledge pre-posttest scores related to the dangers of RYO cigarettes of each group were significantly different (p<0.001, 0.001). Similarly, pre-posttest scores between groups were significantly different (p<0.001, 0.001) respectively. Conclusion: The preference for RYO cigarette is among middle age, primary school level, and low income smokers as RYO cigarettes are easily available and cheap, and popular among smokers. Moreover, volunteers undergoing the exhibition had better knowledge compared to those who did not attend it. Importantly, the accessibility and realization among risk groups are very important for governmental sectors to continue and monitor these tasks to accomplish tobacco control successfully.
