| Abstract | Introduction: Various plant essential oils possessantioxidant activities which could be involved inanti-aging and anti-wrinkle care. The aim of this study was to investigate the antioxidant activity of 8 essentialoils from holy basil, clove, citronella, lemongrass, vetiver, lemon, rosemary and cinnamon. Materials and Methods: The eight selected essential oils were analyzed by GC/MS analysis to fnd their major components and tested using free radical scavenging (DPPH) and lipid peroxidation inhibition (TBARs) methods. Results: Of the eight tested essential oils, their antioxidant activities for free radical scavenging method were as the following order; holy basil > clove >vetiver> citronella and for lipid peroxidation inhibition were as the following order; cinnamon >lemongrass >holy basil > clove >vetiver> citronella, respectively. Conclusion: From the two anti-oxidative tests, holy basil and clove oil were potential natural antioxidant essential oils. However, different herb essential oils are composed of different components. Therefore,it is important to further study the potential cosmeceutical bioactivities of these essential oils. |
