Abstract The objective of this study was to assess the effects of drug counseling and music therapy on the severityof pain, stress and depression in cancer patients at Buri Ram hospital. Study design was a quasi-experimentalstudy with two comparison groups. A total of 30 patients participated in the study; 15 patients were allocated in the control group and 15 patients were allocated in the study group. The study group received drug counseling and music therapy, while the control group received only drug counseling. Both groups were assessed before and after intervention. The severity of pain was assessed by Numerical Pain Scale (0-10). The severity of stress was assessed by Suanprung Stress Test-20 (0-100) and the severity of depression was assessed by Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression (0-53). Patient?s characteristics were similar in both groups. After receiving intervention, the severity of stress in control group decreased significantly (p=0.046) while pain and depression were not different (p > 0.005). In study group, the severity of pain, stress and depression were significantly decreased (p=0.046, 0.005 and 0.015 respectively). The severity of pain and stress were correlated with severity of depression (Correlation Coefficient=0.390, 0.574; p=0.033, <0.001, respectively). In conclusion, counseling and music therapy in cancer patients can decrease the severity of pain and depression. The severity of pain and stress were correlated with severity of depression.
