| Abstract | The objective of this study was to determine the effect of nonformulary drug requests on the pharmacy cost and trend in requesting these drugs. Data of all nonformulary drug request records of Sisaket Hospital between January 1, 2004 and December 31, 2005 were collected. The study showed that the processing time of obtaining each nonformulary drug request accounted for 88.63 minutes and the mean pharmacy cost was 131.25 bahts per request. During the two-year study period, 332 nonformulary drug request forms were received. Of these requests, 23 were in 2004 and 309 were in 2005. It was approximately 13 times increasing from year to year. Time required for processing the request increased from 2,038.49 to 27,386.67 minutes. The pharmacy costs also increased from 3,018.75 to 40,556.25 bahts. Moreover, it was found that more than half of these requests from medical medicine department (53.0%), 14.0% from the surgical medicine and 4.5% for psychotic drugs. Eighty-five percents of all requests were non-essential drugs. However, the actual reasons of requesting nonformulary drugs were unexplained in this study. |
