| Abstract | The ethyl acetate and methanolic extracts of five edible plants from the northeast Thailand used as traditional medicine for treatment of various infectious diseases were investigated for their antimicrobial activities by using the disc-diffusion assay and broth dilution method. These plants are Barringtonia acutangula (L.) Gaertn., Cleome gynandra Linn., Luffa acutangula (Linn.) Roxb., Sauropus androgynus (Linn.) Merr., and Limnophila geoffrayi Bonati. The study revealed that whereas all extracts had no effect on the growth of tested yeast (Candida albican) and mold (Aspergillus niger), some extracts were active against several bacteria. Among these, the methanolic extract of Barringtonia acutangula Gaertn was the most active because it showed antimicrobial effect against all tested bacteria, including Escherichia coli, Salmonella |
