| Abstract | Interspecific hybrids between Jatrophacurcas ? Jatropha integerrima are potential geneticresources for jatropha improvement. However, theirpollen is normally partially sterile. This study wasconducted to determine pollen viability status andseed set of the hybrids. Pollen viability was estimatedby staining with 1% acetocarmine. The results showedthat all interspecific hybrids had pollen viability fallingbetween their parents. The pollen viability of interspecifichybrid derived from a cross between J. curcas (highphorbol esters accession) ? J. integerrima rangedfrom 47% to 89% with an average of 72%. Similarlythe viability of the hybrid J. curcas (low phorbolesters accession) ? J. integerrima ranged from 44% to90% with an average of 73%. The hybrid with lowpollen viability also set less seeds. This information isuseful for plant breeders to select the pollen donor ininterspecific breeding programs. |
