Abstract Given increasing world energy demand, instabilities of supply and the adverse environmental impacts of the typical fossil fuels, there is an urgent need to establish an efficient and environmentally friendly energy industry in order to move on a sustainable economic development path. This paper reviews the current energy situation in Thailand and highlights her efforts using a range of economic and financial measures to encourage investment in energy efficiency technologies and equipment, together with the promotion of conservation measures. Even though efforts may not be at all times successful as there are many factors contributing to the success in using these instruments, we need to learn and plan to overcome possible failures. Policy measures to change behaviors of energy users towards more efficient uses of energy and also reduction in energy demand would be the cost effectiveness approach and will continue to hold an important role in energy management and planning on the global scale.
