| Abstract | Climate change and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions have recently been a focus of global environmental attention. Several nations significantly put their efforts into mitigating the environmental impact by initiating new legislation and regulations to control GHG emissions from industrial sectors. The transportation industry is among the highest GHG-emitting sectors and it is in a need of urgent action in lowering GHG emissions. Existing studies mostly highlighted the environmental impact during the regular operation of road pavement. However, the impact during construction operations should be taken into consideration to offer a holistic view of environmental sustainability to transportation planners. This study presents a novel quantification model in evaluating GHG emissions due to road pavement construction by using process-based analysis. The model is composed of five modules that have capabilities in evaluating GHG emissions from (1) material production and acquisition; (2) material transportation to the project site; (3) heavy equipment usage; (4) on-site machine usage; (5) on-site electricity usage. The model is applied to a hypothetical pavement project to compare the environmental impacts of flexible and rigid pavements during construction. This model should prove useful to transportation agencies in evaluating the environmental impact, as well as designing and planning of construction of highway pavement projects. |
