| Abstract | This study investigates the association between serum levels of toxic and essential traceelements and asthma in adults from Basrah, Iraq. Fifty asthmatic patients (30 females, 20 males;20–60 years) and twenty age- and sex-matched healthy controls (10 females, 10 males) wereenrolled. Blood concentrations of lead (Pb), nickel (Ni), chromium (Cr), cobalt (Co), cadmium(Cd), zinc (Zn), magnesium (Mg), iron (Fe), copper (Cu), and selenium (Se) were determinedusing inductively coupled plasma (ICP) techniques. Mean serum levels of Pb, Ni, Co, Cd,and Cr were significantly higher in asthmatic patients compared with controls (P < 0.01), withchromium showing the greatest relative increase (≈381%), followed by nickel, cobalt, cadmium,and lead. In contrast, Zn, Mg, and Se concentrations were significantly reduced in the asthmagroup, whereas Cu was significantly elevated and Fe showed a slight, non-significant increase.Odds ratio analysis revealed that elevated levels of Pb (OR = 4.82, 95% CI: 2.14–10.86), Ni(OR = 6.34, 95% CI: 2.56–15.70), Co (OR = 5.91, 95% CI: 2.38–14.68), Cd (OR = 5.23, 95%CI: 2.21–12.38), and Cr (OR = 8.67, 95% CI: 3.41–22.04) were significantly associated withincreased asthma risk, while reduced levels of Zn (OR = 0.21, 95% CI: 0.09–0.49) and Se(OR = 0.18, 95% CI: 0.07–0.45) were associated with decreased risk. Inter-element correlationswere observed among measured metals. These findings highlight the importance of monitoringenvironmental metal exposure and trace element status as part of asthma risk assessment andmanagement strategies in highly industrialized and conflict-affected regions such as Basrah. |
