Abstract The use of fish species as environmental biomarkers was proposed. A bioindicator and monitor of their effect on the health of creatures and aquatic ecosystems may be found by investigating the toxicity of heavy metals in fishes. The acute toxicity of cadmium and their toxicological effects on median lethal concentration (LC50) of widely consumed three freshwater fishes included Silver barb, Barbonymus gonionotus (Bleeker, 1850), Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus (Linnaeus, 1758) and Climbing perch, Anabas testudineus (Bloch, 1792) were observed for 96 hrs to determine suitable ranges to be employed in the lethality test's final trials, preliminary trials were done. In the final trials, mortalities were assessed and LC50 values were calculated values by Probit analysis. The results showed that LC50 values increased with a decrease in mean exposure times for Cd. The LC50 values of Cd on B. gonionotus for 24, 48, 72 and 96 hrs were 26.9946, 17.7884, 12.1246, and 5.1713 mgCd/L respectively. The values of LC50 on O. niloticus were 57.6966, 46.2676, 42.4668, and 41.7624 mgCd/L, respectively; and the LC50 values of Cd on A. testudineus were 134.5610, 108.5223, 73.2544, and 47.3254 mgCd/L, respectively. In the control group, no mortality and normal behavioral response of fishes were occurred during the experimental period. These results revealed higher tolerance among A. testudineus than O. niloticus and B. gonionotus. The outcome of this study provides index for management, monitoring, and surveillance of Cd accumulation and consumption of these fish species.
