| Abstract | This paper seeks to understand the application, usage and impact of information and communication technologies (ICT) in leveraging e-commerce by small tourism businesses in the Goldfields region of Central Victoria. The region accounts for 13% of tourism related businesses in regional Victoria and in 2005, contributing $A545 million and 4,301 direct tourism jobs. Specifically, this paper aims to identify attitudes to the current global economic crisis and identify issues of connectivity, ICT skill development, customer and supplier electronic interaction, marketing and sales exploitation of ICT and ICT impacts, drivers and inhibitors. This paper is based on in-depth interviews with nine selected businesses based on local industry recommendations and a balance of tourism industry sectors from the ANZSIC classification. As well as gathering in-depth information the interviews served to trial a wider survey of the region. The resulting analysis is expected to provide direction to regional, state and national policy makers, educators as well as the tourism and ICT industries, both regionally and beyond. |
