Abstract | The objectives of this research are: 1) to study the principles of the Five Precepts and the Five Virtues in Theravāda Buddhism, 2) to examine the current application of these principles in improving the quality of life of the community in Thung Fon Subdistrict, Thung Fon District, Udon Thani Province, and 3) to propose guidelines for applying the Five Precepts and the Five Virtues to enhance the quality of life in the community of Thung Fon Subdistrict, Thung Fon District, Udon Thani Province. This research is qualitative in nature, utilizing document analysis and interviews with 30 key informants. Data were collected using interview forms and analyzed through comparative analysis to identify relationships between the data.The findings reveal that1. The findings indicate that the Five Precepts and Five Dhammas in Theravāda Buddhism serve as fundamental principles that cultivate morality and ethics. The Five Precepts emphasize abstaining from actions that cause suffering, contributing to the overall improvement of quality of life across all social groups and levels.2. Regarding the current application of these principles in the community, the study found that they are integrated across multiple dimensions. In the economic aspect, ethical occupations and responsible resource management are promoted. Socially, the principles foster unity and reduce conflicts. In terms of health, campaigns encourage abstinence from intoxicants and support physical and mental well-being. In education, moral values and life skills are instilled. Environmentally, the community is encouraged to conserve natural resources and develop environmental awareness.3. The proposed guidelines for enhancing the community’s quality of life through the Five Precepts and the Five Dhammas include promoting right livelihood, honest communication, reducing health issues related to substance abuse, fostering ethical education, and encouraging sustainable environmental conservation. These applications contribute to the happiness and sustainability of the community. |
